Written by Jay: I’ve spent 10+ years buying and removing vehicles NZ-wide, andd these days I’m based out of our Frankton yard with Car Wrecker Hamilton, covering Hamilton first, then Tauranga, Rotorua, and New Plymouth (plus the wider Waikato, Bay of Plenty, and Taranaki regions).
The Short Answer
If you just want to know the best way to sell your car, start here:
- Want the most money?
A private sale usually gives a tidy, roadworthy car the best chance of achieving a higher selling price. - Want the fastest or easiest sale?
A direct car buyer or trade-in generally involves fewer steps. - Car damaged, faulty or not running?
A specialist vehicle buyer may suit the car better than trying to prepare it for a private sale. - Want to know what your car is worth?
There is no useful one-price-fits-all NZ range. The fastest way to get a free vehicle valuation or quote from us is to send through your rego, kilometres, condition and location using our online form.
The best option comes down to four things: your car’s condition, how much you want for it, how quickly you want it gone and how much effort you want to put into the sale.

Where Should I Sell My Car?
There is no single place that pays the most for every vehicle.
| Selling option | Best suited to | Price potential | Speed | Effort |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private sale | Tidy, roadworthy cars | Usually strongest gross-price potential | Slower | Higher |
| Dealer trade-in | Replacing your current car | Usually lower than private sale | Fast | Low |
| Direct car buyer | Owners wanting a straightforward sale | Depends on the vehicle | Usually fast | Low |
| Specialist buyer/wrecker | Damaged, faulty or non-running vehicles | Based on current condition | Usually fast | Low |
Consumer NZ also notes that selling privately generally gets more money than trading a vehicle in, while trade-in offers convenience because the dealer handles the resale side.
From my experience buying vehicles, the important thing is to match the car with the right type of buyer. A clean late-model car and a 20-year-old vehicle with a failed gearbox should not necessarily be sold the same way.
What Is the Fastest Way to Sell a Car?
If speed matters most, a private listing usually involves the most work. You may need to photograph the car, create the listing, answer messages, organize viewings, handle test drives and negotiate before someone actually pays.
A trade-in removes much of that process if you are already buying another car. A direct buyer can also simplify things because you are dealing with one potential buyer rather than advertising to the public.
The basic trade-off is:
More control over the final price = usually more time and effort.
Faster, simpler sale = usually less control over the final price.
Neither is automatically better. It depends on what matters to you.
How Much Does It Cost to Sell a Car Online?
If you sell privately, advertising costs need to be included when comparing your final return.
As of September 2026, Trade Me Motors charges an upfront car-listing fee based on the vehicle’s asking price and the listing package chosen. For casual sellers listing fewer than 10 cars a year, current Basic listing fees range from $19 to $199, with Standard and Premium listings costing more. Trade Me says car listings can run for up to 90 days, with free relisting within 90 days. Fees can change, so check the current Motors fee schedule before listing.
Advertising is not the only possible cost. You might also spend money on:
- cleaning or grooming
- minor repairs
- valid WoF
- listing upgrades
- transporting a vehicle that cannot be driven
That is why I prefer looking at the net return, rather than just the sale price:
Net return = sale price – repairs – advertising – fees – other direct selling costs
How Do I Get the Most Money for My Car?
Getting top dollar does not necessarily mean spending a lot of money before selling.
Start with the market.
Compare cars with a similar year, model, kilometres and specification. Pay attention to condition as well, an asking price for an immaculate example does not automatically make your car worth the same amount.
Present the car properly.
Clean it, remove personal items and take clear photos. Consumer NZ also recommends improving a vehicle's presentation before a private sale or trade-in.
Have the useful information ready.
Rego, kilometres, service history, spare keys and honest details about known faults make it easier for someone to assess the vehicle.
Be careful about spending on repairs.
A small repair may make a car easier to sell. A major repair may cost more than the extra value it creates.
Compare your options.
If you are considering a dealer or direct buyer, get more than one figure where practical and make sure each buyer is pricing the same vehicle condition.
How Do I Find Out What My Car Is Actually Worth?
- make, model and year
- kilometres
- mechanical condition
- body and interior condition
- WoF and registration status
- accident history
- current demand
- whether it starts and drives
That is why I would not trust a generic statement saying something like “most cars are worth $X to $Y.” The range would be so broad that it would not help you make a decision.
You can get a rough idea by comparing similar vehicles advertised in New Zealand, but remember that advertised price and actual selling price are not always the same thing.
If you want a figure based on your actual vehicle, the fastest way to get a free valuation or quote from our team is to submit your vehicle details online. Send the rego, kilometres, location and an honest description of the condition. Photos can also help where the vehicle has damage or obvious faults.
There is no obligation to accept it. It simply gives you another real number to compare against a private-sale price or trade-in.
Want to Sell Directly to a Vehicle Buyer?
- whether they buy vehicles in your car's condition
- whether collection is included
- whether the quoted amount can change at pickup
- how and when you will be paid
- whether there are any extra charges
For a broader comparison, see this guide on the best cash for cars companies in NZ, which covers companies that buy vehicles in a range of conditions. The highest headline offer is not necessarily the best result if towing, fees or later deductions reduce what you actually receive.
Common Questions About Selling a Car in NZ
Who pays the most for cars in NZ?
No buyer pays the most for every car. A private buyer may pay more for a tidy roadworthy vehicle, while a specialist buyer may place more value on a damaged, faulty or non-running vehicle than a normal retail buyer would.
What is the best place to sell a car in NZ?
It depends on the vehicle. Private selling may suit a good roadworthy car. A trade-in suits someone replacing their vehicle. Direct or specialist buyers can suit people prioritising speed or selling vehicles that are harder to sell privately.
What is the quickest way to sell a car?
A trade-in or direct buyer generally involves fewer steps than advertising privately because you do not need to manage multiple enquiries, viewings and negotiations.
Is Trade Me worth paying for?
It can be if your vehicle has good private-buyer demand and the potential increase in sale price justifies the listing cost and effort. Compare the fee and your time against the alternatives before deciding.
How can I get top dollar for my car?
Know the market, present the vehicle properly, provide accurate information, avoid repairs that cost more than they add, and compare more than one selling option.
What if I mainly want to know how much my car is worth?
Use comparable NZ listings for a rough market guide, then get an actual offer based on your vehicle. If you want a free figure from our team, submitting the vehicle details through our online valuation form is the quickest place to start.
