Written by Jay: I’ve spent 10+ years buying and removing vehicles NZ-wide, andd these days I’m based out of our Frankton yard with Car Wrecker Hamilton, covering Hamilton first, then Tauranga, Rotorua, and New Plymouth (plus the wider Waikato, Bay of Plenty, and Taranaki regions).
Summary
A scrap car in New Zealand can be worth a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars, depending on the vehicle, its condition and what is still usable. Some complete, high-demand vehicles can be worth up to $12,000.
The biggest factors are the make and model, engine and gearbox, usable parts, completeness, damage and current demand.
If you want a figure quickly, you have two options:
- Request a valuation from us using your rego, location and vehicle condition.
- Use the free vehicle valuation calculator for a rough estimated value range before requesting an actual offer.

How much is my scrap car worth?
There is no single scrap price for a car. Two vehicles of the same age can have completely different values. A complete ute with a usable engine, gearbox, wheels and body panels may be worth several thousand dollars, while a stripped or badly damaged small car may be worth only a few hundred.
At Car Wrecker Hamilton, some higher-value vehicles can fetch up to $12,000, particularly when they are complete and there is good demand for their parts.
That is an upper range, not what every scrap vehicle is worth.
What affects the value most?
When I look at a vehicle, these are the main things that affect the number:
- Make and model - popular vehicles generally have stronger parts demand.
- Engine and gearbox - working or reusable drivetrains can add significant value.
- Completeness - wheels, battery, catalytic converter, interior and body parts all matter.
- Condition - accident, mechanical, flood, fire and rust damage affect what can still be reused.
- Vehicle type - utes, vans, 4WDs and commercial vehicles can carry more recoverable value.
- Location and access - collection costs also form part of the calculation.
You do not need to repair or clean the vehicle before asking what it is worth. Accurate information is more useful than making it look tidy.
How do wreckers calculate a car's value?
A simple way to think about it is:
Vehicle value = reusable parts + recyclable materials + current demand − collection and processing costs.
It is not based on metal weight alone.
For example, a rear-damaged SUV could still have a usable engine, gearbox, doors, wheels, lights and interior. Those components can make it worth considerably more than a bare shell.
The opposite is also true. Removing valuable parts before getting a quote can lower what the complete vehicle is worth.
Can a damaged or non-running car still have value?
Yes. Cars with blown engines, gearbox problems, accident damage, failed WoFs or other major faults can still have value because the whole vehicle does not become useless when one part fails.
The important question is what remains usable.
A car with a failed engine but good panels, gearbox, wheels and interior may still be useful for parts. A vehicle with severe fire or flood damage may have fewer reusable components and therefore a lower value.
How can I check what my car is worth?
You do not need to work it out yourself.
Option 1: Get a valuation from Car Wrecker Hamilton
Send us your vehicle rego, location, vehicle condition. We can use that information to assess the vehicle and give you a quote.
Option 2: Get a rough estimate online
If you just want a quick guide first, use this
free vehicle valuation calculator.
Enter your rego and a few details about the vehicle, its condition and location. The calculator will return an estimated value range.
It is a rough estimate rather than a guaranteed offer, but it gives you a useful starting point before deciding what to do next.
How do I know if a scrap quote is fair?
- whether vehicle collection is included
- whether there are towing or admin fees
- whether the quoted price can change at pickup
- what circumstances would cause the price to change.
A quote may reasonably change if important information was missing, for example, if the vehicle was described as complete but the wheels, battery or other major parts have already been removed.
Unexpected fees are a different story.
